Interesting City of Hope Research on Blueberries and Triple Negative Breast Cancer

Searching around for hopeful things for breast cancer patients is one of my favorite things to do (call me crazy but I like to help) and today I found some interesting research from City of Hope, a cancer center in Duarte, California.

The research demonstrated that blueberries have the ability to control tumor growth, decrease metastasis and induce cell death in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC)

A Quick Explanation of Triple Negative Breast Cancer

Triple negative breast cancer is a particular subtype of breast cancer that lacks estrogen, progesterone and human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2) receptors and because most breast cancer tumors do have at least one of these receptors, doctors are able to target them with specific therapies.

I have spoken to quite a few patients whose tumors were triple negative and many were more than a little anxious over their diagnosis particularly because there seems to be a lot of really negative information on the Internet about triple negative breast cancer – that it accounts for only about 15% of breast cancer and that it has a poorer prognosis compared to other subtypes with the receptors present. Thus, whenever I do find some positive research about TNBC, I like to share it.

Blueberries Are a Triple Threat

Dr Shiuan Chen, director of City of Hope’s Division of Tumor Cell Biology said “blueberries help fight triple-negative breast cancers by suppressing pathways critical to tumor development and migration.”

The research has not been carried out on real, live people yet (they are still waiting for the results of that study) but they have used it on TNBC cell cultures and also on laboratory animals with great results.  The researchers discovered that the group that received the blueberries had a tumor weight that was 70% lighter, exhibited significantly lower proliferation rates, and higher apoptosis activity (apoptosis means programmed cell death) than the group not receiving the blueberries.  So they considered that to be a triple threat against TNBC.  I found a YouTube video where they discuss their findings – click here to view it.

Researchers estimated that in humans, a person weighing 130 lbs would need 4 oz daily to achieve the good effects that the studies exhibited.

Got TNBC?  Get those blueberries in ya!

Amazon Herb With Potent Anti-Cancer Effects: Graviola

Article updated March 12, 2014

I have been reading some interesting research about a fruit tree from the Amazon rainforest known as graviola – also known as soursop or custard apple.

Graviola (Annona muricata) is being researched for its anti cancer properties.  It has been shown especially effective against EGFR, an oncogene.

I was interested to learn that even Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center published an article about it in the Integrative Medicine section of their website – here’s a link to that article.

Graviola Is Backed By Research

You will be happy to know that graviola is backed by some interesting research.  On the pubmed.gov website I found this 2011 study:

Selective growth inhibition of human breast cancer cells by graviola fruit extract in vitro and in vivo involving downregulation of EGFR expression“.  I know that sounds like a lot of gobble-de-gook, but here’s what it means.

There is an oncogene known as EGFR (that stands for epidermal growth factor receptor).  An oncogene is a gene that has the potential to cause a normal cell to become cancerous.  For those who have this EGFR gene, doctors have given them a poor prognosis because of its resistance to some chemotherapy drugs.  The study showed that graviola fruit extract significantly down-regulated EGFR gene expression and inhibited the growth of breast cancer cells in mice.

I also found this 2013 study:

Anti cancer activity on Graviola, an exciting medicinal plant extract vs various cancer cell lines and a detailed computational study on its potent anti-cancerous leads

And this study done in 2012:

Graviola: a novel promising natural-derived drug that inhibits tumorigenicity and metastasis of pancreatic cancer cells in vitro and in vivo through altering cell metabolism

Human Studies Lacking

It appears that many of the studies were either performed on mice or in test tubes (in vitro), and some used extracts from the fruit, while others used other parts of the tree – the leaves, the bark, etc.

We still need a standardized trial on humans before we can get truly excited about the anti cancer properties of graviola, but it certainly bears watching.  I do have a good source in the USA for the leaves of the graviola tree, so contact me if you need that information.

Avoid Sugar, Help Your Immune System

Avoid Sugar, Help Your Immune System

Sugar – how we love it and how it wreaks havoc in our bodies and our immune system.

I was watching “60 Minutes” recently and watched their opening segment on sugar and its effects on our health.

If you missed it, click here to watch it. It’s a DON’T MISS episode.

There is a lot of controversy between natural health practitioners and conventional medicine doctors as to whether sugar is or is not detrimental when you have cancer.

There are those that will tell you that every cell in the body requires glucose (sugar) for fuel and that sugar is NOT detrimental, but simply fuel for cells.

So, you’ve watched the 60 Minutes episode on sugar, you’ve seen that side of the argument.  Here’s a more moderate approach offered to us by the website Caring 4 Cancer.  I’ll let you decide for yourself (which is always the best way) whether sugar plays a role in cancer.

The fact is, high insulin levels (which occur as a result of having lots of sugar in your diet) are associated with a 283% increased risk of breast cancer.

Sugar also depresses your immune system by 50-90% for up to 5 hours after consumption, something cancer patients absolutely cannot afford to have happen.

Cancer cells act much differently than normal cells. Normal cells need oxygen. Cancer cells despise oxygen. In fact, oxygen therapy is a favorite among many of the alternative clinics I have researched.

You see, cancer metabolizes through a process of fermentation.  If you know anything about making wine, you’ll know that fermentation requires sugar.

Most natural therapists recommend a specific sort of diet – juicing organic vegetables and fruits is one of the best because the juices contain living enzymes and vitamins which will help to kill the cancer cells.  Cancer cells like cooked foods over raw because cooking destroys enzymes and heat sensitive vitamins.

If you need more information about juicing, see my page Diet and Cancer and my article: The 12 Best Benefits of Juicing for Breast Cancer.
