Modified Citrus Pectin Shows Anti-Cancer Benefits

Happy 2014!  I hope that this year brings you boundless good health, happiness and much success in all areas of your life.

In a chance discussion with one of my subscribers I was reminded of the nutrients recommended by my naturopath in the first days after my breast cancer diagnosis, one of which was Modified Citrus Pectin, which until then I knew nothing about.

I would like to share this unique nutraceutical with you today.

What Exactly Is Modified Citrus Pectin?

Citrus pectin is a complex polysaccharide (a carbohydrate chemically linked to sugar molecules) found in the pulp and peel of citrus fruits. 

Pectin is found within the cell walls of many plants, but particularly citrus fruit, plums and apple skins.  The word “pectin” is derived from the Greek word for “congealed” or “curdled” because that is its action, and plant pectins are used in the food industry as gelling or thickening agents.

Citrus pectin needs to be modified by treatment with high pH and temperature to be more bioavailable, because in its natural form it is not absorbable by the body.  Recent studies show that it can even be modified with ultrasound. 

The exciting thing is that a growing body of research indicates that modified citrus pectin has potent effects on cancer growth and metastasis. 

Recent Research on Modified Citrus Pectin

A recent Chinese study, published in June 2013 in the journal Food & Function, Comparative studies on the anti-tumor activities of high temperature- and pH-modified citrus pectin indicated that modified citrus pectin inhibited certain cancer cell lines, induced apoptosis (natural cell death) and extended the survival time of tumor-bearing mice.

In one 2010 human study, modified citrus pectin assisted prostate cancer sufferers who had developed chemoresistance to the drug cisplatin.  You can read that study by clicking here.

An older study done in 2003 on men with prostate cancer, “Modified citrus pectin (MCP) increases the prostate-specific antigen doubling time in men with prostate cancer: a phase II pilot study” indicated that modified citrus pectin had benefits for men with recurrent prostate cancer.

Many, many other studies have been done on modified citrus pectin at top research institutes and the growing body of scientific evidence indicates there is ample proof that this nutraceutical is very effective and safe for long-term use, particularly in the areas of cellular health, immune system function and longevity. 

I found it interesting that MCP has also been clinically proven to safely and effectively remove heavy metals and environmental toxins from the body, without removing essential minerals, which is a common side effect of other chelation therapies. 

I definitely recommend the use of modified citrus pectin for its effects on tumor growth and metastasis, for its actions on the immune system and for increasing cellular and vascular health.
